Uber Fixed Fares in Ireland: Why Drivers Say the Meter Is Being Undermined

RTÉ reported that the Oireachtas Committee on Transport heard Uber’s fixed fare offer had “changed the balance” for taxi drivers and passengers alike — calculated by the app’s algorithm as an alternative to the NTA’s regulated meter fare.
What drivers are asking for
Industry representatives called for the National Transport Authority to be explicitly empowered to regulate taxi apps — or, if that is not possible, for a publicly regulated booking system.
They also argued that the 2013 Taxi Regulation Act was written before today’s tech platforms existed, and that legislation needs updating to protect driver incomes and customers alike.
