Irish Taxi App Commission in 2026: What Drivers Should Compare

Commission is one of the clearest costs on a taxi app statement, but a single headline percentage rarely tells the whole story. The Irish Times reported in May 2026 that driver-run apps were challenging large platforms with lower-cost offers, against a backdrop in which Freenow commission can run to 25% of a fare.

That reporting followed evidence to the Oireachtas Committee on Transport in January. Driver representatives said rising platform charges and app control over work allocation were putting pressure on income. Those are industry representatives’ views, not an official measure of every driver’s profit, but they show why fee clarity has become a central issue.

Freenow’s current Irish driver help page describes a standard revenue share of 15%. It lists 20% for hospitality and Dublin Airport Fleet trips, and 25% for Saver Fleet trips. The 25% figure is therefore real for particular work, but it should not be presented as the rate on every standard taxi booking.

Different booking categories can also come with different volumes, waiting rules or passenger prices. A lower passenger fare may produce more requests, while a higher platform share may leave less from each one. Drivers need both sides of that equation before deciding whether an offer works for their hours and vehicle.

A useful comparison starts with gross fares, then subtracts the platform fee, any VAT applying to booking services, fuel or charging, insurance, vehicle finance and maintenance, licensing costs, cleaning, and unpaid time between jobs. No reputable platform can promise one national net-earnings figure because those inputs vary sharply by driver and location.

The same percentage can land differently on a short city trip and a long airport run. Drivers should review a full week or month rather than one busy night, and separate paid driving time from the time spent waiting or travelling to a pickup.

Ask which rate applies to each booking type, whether the rate includes VAT, whether you can opt out of particular fleets, and how cancellations, tips, tolls and airport charges are handled. Check when rates may change and whether the platform gives clear notice. A weekly invoice should reconcile to the jobs shown in the app.

Job volume matters too. Low commission with very few suitable requests may not improve earnings, just as high volume does not guarantee profit when the cost of each booking is unclear. The fair comparison is the amount retained after platform charges and operating costs, alongside the quality of support when a payment or fare is disputed.
